A large winged shadow rushed over the ground at almost dizzying speeds, headed toward the fully abandoned grasslands of New York where herd beasts had recently begun appearing in massive quantities. It was time for a hunt. The shadow belonged to an Anthro Draconian named Leon Vinci, and today was the day that he would teach himself to hunt. Lately there had been a sickness circulating in the area where he and his family lived, and his mother had caught it. It seemed to be nothing more than a simple flu-like virus, which in any other case would be mostly harmless. But without food, even the flu could become a killer.
Leon squinted his eyes, staring far into the distance as he flew. He grinned as he spotted his quarry. Less than a mile away was a huge herd of deer with no less than fifty beasts in sight. Perfect, he thought. He had two different plans in mind. He'd never been hunting, and he didn't know the best way to go about things, but he was no stranger to trial and error. Time to put plan number one into action. He glided down to the ground so that he could get rid of his pack. This first plan wouldn't work with the burden of his back pack. he needed to be able to move quickly. He set it down by a pile of rocks, removed his jacket and set it with the back pack, then took to the air once more.
He flew silently and high in the air so as not to be seen or heard. When he was directly above the herd he began a steep dive. He'd seen animal predators diving like this for their prey in pictures, perhaps this would work just as well for him. Just a bit closer...
